WHILST ON A WALK

I was ambling through the forest,
gossiping with my friends the trees
When suddenly I came upon the Devil -
he was down on his scaly knees.
I stopped, unsure of how to proceed
I didn't want to intrude, I waited
His back was to me, his head bowed
I could hear the tears flow, unabated.
Before I could flee, he looked up at me
We looked at each other for ages it seemed
Till finally he looked away,
his shoulders began to really shake
Mortified I turned around to flee
"Be gone!" Screamed he.
"How could your kind be so cruel?
You vile upstarts, you manic thieves,
with all your sin and wickedness,
there's nothing left for me!
Since all of you are doing a job so fine
of destroying, pillaging and ruining
not just the earth but your own kind
the higher powers have asked me to leave.
What will I do? Where will I go?
I hope all of you are happy!"
The trees were quiet, the birds still
As I ran I could only hear the leaves
breaking under my feet. The Devil's
words were ringing - they had cut deep.
What a snivelling mess! A pathetic fellow
If he had wanted to keep his job so bad
I think he just should have put in more effort.
It's not our fault that we're naturally so much better.
