SHIMMERING RIVER

I stepped out of the house
and fell into a river of sunlight
which swiftly carried me downstream.
I floated by a flock of geese,
my feet skimming the grass while
I tried to take shelter from the clouds.
I swam along leisurely,
splashing lazily at the reflections of
sparrows fluttering just overhead.
Eventually I paddled towards my friends
a merry collection of smiles.
Talking, posing, laughing, dancing -
all intoxicated on sunshine.
Dead leaves catch between my toes.
They are shriveled up reminders of Winter.
I pay them no heed.
I'm drunk on how the promise of summer
flirts with the promise of being free.
