Against The Sky

I’ve got you backed up against a tree.
A butterfly flits about your ankles,
a duck dips below the surface of the water
gossiping excitedly with the fish about this
wild-eyed girl and her dark-smiled lover.
You always thought you were better than me.

I’ve got you on your back in the grass
your hair tousled with green blades..
Petals slipped in your shirt pocket.
I’m a small-time thief who aims to please.
You don’t trust me with any secrets
but your quick kisses have me breathless fast.

You’ve got me with my back against the sky.
Your touch makes my brain stammer,
carelessly splashing colour in the grey, turning
soft whimsy into near-reality, without mercy -
and then suddenly I am alone watching you
my dreams, my lover, fly off leaving me behind.
